North Campus Horizontal Well Project Site Tours
03/20/2024- 03/22/2024
01:00 PM - 02:00 PM M
North Campus Horizontal Well Project Site
At the southwest corner of WCR-8 and Highway 85
Fort Lupton, CO
Project Description:
The City of Aurora is constructing a horizontal Ranney collector well adjacent to the South Platte River near Fort Lupton.  While this well type is common in the Midwest, this is only the second Ranney collector well designed and constructed in Colorado. It consists of a 20-foot diameter, 35-foot-deep concrete caisson from ground surface to bedrock with ten (10) horizontal screened well laterals 200-feet long drilled horizontally and radially from the center of the caisson. The Caisson is complete and the Specialty Contractor, Layne, is currently drilling the screened laterals.
Additionally, a new 36” diameter well manifold pipe will cross the South Platte River and will be constructed using a microtunnel boring machine (MTBM) to install a 48” steel casing pipe. The crossing required construction of watertight secant pile launching and receiving shafts to bedrock. Global Underground will be tunneling the 48” steel casing pipe initial support at the same time Layne is drilling the horizontal well laterals, so this is an exceptional opportunity to witness two unique construction and tunneling methods at once.
